VARS, XLVAR

Syntax: VARS(argumentlist)
  XLVAR(argumentlist)

argumentlist = any combination of numbers, cells, or ranges

VARS returns the sample variance (N-1 weighting) of its arguments. Blank cells and cells containing strings are not counted. The formula is given by:

\begin{displaymath}
\frac{1}{N+1} \sum_{i=1}^N (x_i - \overline{x})^2
\end{displaymath}

XLVAR is a synonym for VARS.

Examples:

VARS(1, 2, 7) = 10.333333

VARS(Y1..Y5) = 84.7, where Y1..Y5 = 22, 24, 29, 34, and 45

XLVAR(K6..K10) = 0.62603, where K6..K10 = 1, .33, 0, -0.66, and -0.99

VAR(K6:K10) = 0.62603, where K6:K10 = 1, .33, 0, -0.66, and -0.99 (in Excel compatibility mode)

Excel function: XLVAR is compatible with Excel's VAR (In Excel compatibility mode, the ``XL'' prefix is not used.)
